The work demonstrates Sicard's energetic, Post-Impressionist-influenced approach to painting, combining expressive brushwork with a strong sense of atmosphere, movement and light. Although particularly associated with the bustling streets, cafés and nightlife of Paris, Sicard also painted landscapes, river views and marine subjects inspired by his extensive travels. Richly handled passages of oil paint give the composition considerable depth and vitality, while the generous 32-inch canvas and 41-inch framed size create substantial wall presence. The painting is signed lower left, while the artist has additionally inscribed the title on the reverse. It remains in its original frame and is described as being in excellent condition. Of particular importance, the painting is accompanied by a signed catalogue raisonné, providing valuable supporting documentation for the work and its attribution. About Pierre Sicard Pierre Sicard (1900–1980) was a French painter, watercolourist and draughtsman known for his lively urban scenes, landscapes, marine subjects, portraits, still lifes and compositions populated with figures. Born in Paris in 1900, he was the son of the prominent French sculptor François-Léon Sicard. Although he did not follow a conventional academic artistic education, Sicard demonstrated an early fascination with drawing and the atmosphere of Parisian life. After initially working alongside his father in sculpture, he began painting seriously during the 1920s. Sicard became particularly attracted to the bars, cafés, dance halls and nightlife of Paris, developing an energetic painterly style influenced by Post-Impressionism. Extensive travels through Europe and Asia subsequently broadened his repertoire to include landscapes and views of different cities and countries. His early exhibitions included shows at important Parisian galleries, and his career later developed internationally. Sicard travelled frequently to the United States and eventually settled in Bel Air, Los Angeles, in 1950. His American paintings included scenes of Los Angeles and New York while retaining the vitality associated with his earlier Parisian works. Today Sicard's paintings are appreciated for their colour, movement and distinctive record of 20th-century urban and social life.
