This impressive set comprises three matching glass decanters, each decorated with an attractive engraved grapevine design. The clear glass has been flashed with rich ruby-red glass before being cut back and engraved, creating a striking contrast between the ruby decoration and the clear glass beneath. The grapevine and foliage decoration is particularly appropriate for a decanter set intended for wines and spirits, while the hand-blown construction and individually fitted stoppers demonstrate the craftsmanship of the period. The three decanters are housed within their original silver-plated copper stand, which allows them to be displayed together as an impressive centrepiece. Unlike a traditional tantalus, the decanters can be easily removed from the stand. Each decanter retains its own original stopper. The stoppers are hollow and mouth-blown, with each one individually fitted to its corresponding decanter and therefore not interchangeable. The ruby glass, engraved decoration and ornate metal stand create a particularly attractive late Victorian/early Art Nouveau appearance. A wonderful piece for a collector of antique Bohemian glass, an elegant addition to a drinks cabinet, or an impressive decorative display. Historical Background The name Friedrich Egermann is particularly significant in the history of Bohemian glass. Egermann (1777–1864), based in Nový Bor, was an influential glassmaker, glass painter, inventor and entrepreneur. He became particularly renowned for his innovations in coloured and stained glass, including the development of the famous red stain, introduced during the 19th century. This technique allowed glassmakers to achieve rich ruby effects that could subsequently be cut and engraved to reveal the clear glass beneath. Egermann's innovations had a major influence on Bohemian glass production and helped establish the region's reputation for highly decorative and technically accomplished glassware.
