Executed in oil on board, this intimate work demonstrates bond's ability to create a remarkable sense of atmosphere and distance on a very small scale. Marine and river subjects formed an important part of his oeuvre, and his mature technique was strongly influenced by the work of j. M. W. Turner, particularly in his treatment of light, weather and the changing character of water and sky. Bond's paintings often combine loose, expressive handling with carefully observed detail. Despite measuring only 6 × 5 inches, this work has the character of a finished painting rather than simply a study, making its diminutive scale particularly appealing. The painting survives in excellent age-appropriate condition and, importantly, remains housed in its original frame, giving the work an attractive period presentation. An appealing example of 19th-century british marine painting by one of liverpool's distinctive victorian artists. About william joseph julius caesar bond william joseph julius caesar bond (1833–1926) was a british landscape and marine painter born at knotty ash, liverpool. Initially apprenticed to liverpool miniature painter, picture dealer and restorer thomas griffiths, bond developed as an artist during a particularly important period in liverpool's victorian art scene. During the 1850s he came under the influence of the pre-raphaelites and began exhibiting at the liverpool academy, becoming an associate in 1856 and a full member in 1859. Bond also exhibited in london, including at the society of british artists, royal academy and british institution, although much of his patronage remained concentrated in northern england. While his early paintings show the precision and intense observation associated with pre-raphaelitism, his mature work increasingly reflected the influence of j. M. W. Turner. He developed a freer approach particularly suited to landscapes, river scenes and seascapes. Bond travelled extensively on sketching expeditions around britain, including cornwall, norfolk and wales, and also visited the low countries. He remained active well into old age and became a familiar figure within the artistic life of merseyside. His distinctive sequence of initials earned him the enduring nickname “alphabet bond.” details artist: william joseph julius caesar bond (1833–1926) medium: oil on board period: victorian / 19th century origin: england style: victorian / british romantic subject: marine / river / boating scene artwork dimensions: 15 × 12.5 cm (6 × 5 in.) framed dimensions: 30 × 27.5 cm (12 × 11 in.) size: small frame: original period frame condition: excellent age-appropriate condition See less
