Executed in oil on board, the painting displays the artist's impressionistic approach to the marine landscape, with expressive handling and an emphasis on changing light, water and atmosphere. Dumont-Duparc was particularly drawn to maritime subjects, with known works ranging from sailing vessels to more distant coastal and international views. Born in Falaise in Normandy, Dumont-Duparc spent much of his working life in and around Paris. His combination of Norman origins and Parisian career placed him within a strong French tradition of marine and landscape painting. The painting is signed at the lower right and presented in a decorative frame. Measuring 16 inches across, it is an appealing small-format example of French marine painting from the first half of the 20th century. About Robert Dumont-Duparc Robert Dumont-Duparc was a French painter born in Falaise, Calvados, who worked primarily in and around Paris. He specialised in landscapes and marine subjects, working principally in oils. His paintings demonstrate a particular interest in ships, coastlines and expansive maritime settings. Dumont-Duparc exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français between 1928 and 1930, placing his work within the established Parisian exhibition tradition of the interwar period. Recorded subjects by the artist include Newfoundland Schooner in Sail and Halong Bay in the Gulf of Tonkin, illustrating the breadth of his interest in maritime subjects.
