Executed in oil on canvas, the work is characteristic of Jones's highly detailed approach to sporting subjects. He became particularly well known for paintings of terriers and other working dogs, frequently portraying them hunting, rabbiting or pursuing quarry. His relatively small-scale compositions allowed him to concentrate on the individual character of the animals and the details of their surroundings. Measuring just 8 × 10 inches, this painting is particularly representative of the compact format for which Jones's work is known. Despite its modest dimensions, the composition retains the narrative quality associated with Victorian sporting painting and reflects the period's enthusiasm for hunting and working dogs. The painting is signed at the lower right and presented in an antique frame, giving an overall framed size of 13 × 15 inches. About Paul Jones Paul Jones, active circa 1855–1888, was a British painter specialising in sporting and animal subjects. He was particularly associated with paintings of terriers, game dogs and hunting scenes, often depicting dogs rabbiting or pursuing cats and rats. Shooting scenes also feature within his known body of work. Jones is thought to have been the son of sporting painter Samuel John Egbert Jones, although this relationship should be treated as traditionally attributed rather than firmly documented. His paintings are especially recognisable for their small dimensions, careful technique and close attention to detail. Rather than relying upon grand-scale sporting compositions, Jones frequently concentrated on intimate scenes in which the behaviour and character of the animals form the principal focus. Today his works appeal particularly to collectors of Victorian animal painting, canine portraiture and traditional British sporting art.
