The composition depicts a monumental dark coastal cliff descending sharply into still water, its imposing mass contrasted against an expansive pale blue-grey sky and distant horizon. Below, the cliff is reflected in deep blue and green water, creating an almost symmetrical division between the physical landscape and its reflection. Executed with substantial layers of artist's paint, the surface displays pronounced impasto and vigorous palette-knife application. Thick passages of pigment give the cliff face an almost geological quality, with areas of moss green, charcoal, ochre, rust and deep blue emerging through the darker layers. The sea and sky are treated more quietly in cool shades of blue, grey and lavender, providing an atmospheric counterpoint to the heavily worked landmass. Subtle variations in texture and colour become increasingly apparent as the viewing angle and surrounding light change. The painting occupies a compelling position between landscape and abstraction. While recognisably inspired by a dramatic coastal environment, its simplified forms, strong horizontal divisions and expressive surfaces give the work a distinctly contemporary character. Presented unframed on stretched canvas, the painting has a strong gallery presence and is particularly well suited to contemporary, minimalist or modern interiors.
