Executed in oil on canvas, the painting depicts a beach scene in Beckett's characteristic loose and atmospheric manner. Influenced by Impressionist painting, Beckett uses confident, expressive brushwork rather than tightly rendered detail, giving the composition a sense of immediacy, movement and changing light. Coastal subjects are particularly well suited to Beckett's technique, allowing broad areas of sea, shore and sky to be treated with energetic strokes and subtle variations of tone. His familiarity with the East Anglian landscape has provided an enduring source of inspiration throughout his career. At 30 inches wide and 39 inches framed, the work has considerable decorative presence while remaining versatile enough for both traditional and contemporary interiors. A strong example of Modern British landscape and coastal painting, combining an impressionistic approach with Beckett's distinctive understanding of the British landscape. About Fred Beckett Fred Beckett is a British painter particularly recognised for his landscapes, coastal subjects and marine paintings. His knowledge of his native East Anglia has provided the inspiration for many of his works, although his repertoire has expanded to include figurative and continental subjects. Beckett became a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, serving as its President from 1995 to 1997. He has also been associated with several prominent British artistic organisations, including the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, the Royal Society of British Artists and the Wapping Group of Artists. In 2009, he was elected a member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists. His achievements include the ROI Alan Gourley Memorial Prize in 1995, the Le Clerc Fowle Gold Medal in 2002, and the Dartington Crystal Chalice in 2006 for his contribution and service to the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. Stylistically, Beckett is recognised for a loose, impressionistic technique, using expressive brushwork and an accomplished understanding of light and atmosphere. His works have been exhibited extensively and are represented in private collections internationally.
