The Madonna is presented frontally beneath dramatic ceremonial drapery, crowned and surrounded by a radiant halo. She holds the Christ Child and an orb symbolising divine authority, while her expansive robes are embellished with intricate floral, foliate and jewel-like motifs. Deep greens, warm reds and golden accents create the sumptuous appearance for which Cusqueña religious paintings are particularly admired. The carefully balanced symmetry and flattened decorative treatment demonstrate the lasting influence of the Cusco School, in which European Christian iconography was interpreted through indigenous and mestizo artistic traditions of the Andes. Two arrangements of flowers positioned at the lower corners further enrich the composition, reinforcing its devotional and ceremonial character. Paintings of this type were created for churches, chapels and private devotional settings throughout the Andean region. Executed in oil on board, the painting is presented in an attractive period frame with a deep red velvet slip and gilt inner border, complementing the rich palette of the composition. The painting remains structurally sound, displaying attractive age-related craquelure, minor surface wear and patination consistent with its period. Colours remain rich and clearly defined, with no obvious major losses or intrusive restoration. The frame displays expected age-related wear while presenting well overall. A highly decorative example of Andean sacred art, ideally suited to collections of Latin American religious painting, Cusco School works and historic devotional art.
