Painted in oil on canvas, the composition is handled with a restrained Impressionistic approach. Broad, expressive passages of muted grey, sand and pale blue describe the rocky coastline and beach, while brighter blues across the water provide a striking contrast. The deliberately understated palette and loose brushwork give the scene a wonderfully tranquil, almost ethereal quality. The painting is signed “W. Hardie Hay” lower right and is presented in an attractive Whistler-style frame, whose subtle silvered and neutral tones complement the painting particularly well. William Hardie Hay was a British painter known principally for landscapes, coastal views and beach scenes, often incorporating figures. Born in Birkenhead, he studied at the Glasgow School of Art before continuing his artistic education in Paris under Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant and Jules Lefebvre. Hay exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris before returning to Britain and settling in Glasgow. His recorded exhibition career, spanning approximately 1887–1933, included appearances at the Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, New Gallery, Royal Scottish Academy and Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolours. A particularly decorative example of Hay's marine work, combining British landscape painting with the lighter palette and freer handling associated with late 19th and early 20th-century Impressionism.
