Pring to the lower right. The artist captures the energy and intensity of the race through vigorous, expressive brushwork and substantial areas of impasto. The horses emerge dramatically from a warm, atmospheric background, their bodies articulated through layered passages of ochre, chestnut, cream, blue and charcoal. Highlights across the horses and jockeys create a strong sense of movement, while the loosely worked foreground suggests dust and ground being thrown into the air beneath their hooves. Particularly effective is the frontal composition, which places the viewer directly in the path of the approaching horses. The tightly arranged figures, combined with the expressive handling of the paint, give the work considerable immediacy and visual impact. The painting is executed in oil on canvas and presented in a traditional moulded wooden frame.
