The work features an intricate arrangement of interlocking geometric and curvilinear forms, built around a strongly defined central passage or recessed field that gives the composition its sense of depth and provides a visual interpretation of the title Gateway. Vivid passages of blue, orange and red are balanced by more restrained neutral tones, creating a dynamic interplay of colour, line and spatial movement. Huntermann developed a distinctive modernist approach characterised by expressive colour and increasingly abstracted forms. Beyond his studio practice, he was an active figure within the British art community, serving as President of the United Society of Artists from 2005 to 2008, and was associated with the Dorking Group of Artists and Suffolk Open Studios. He was also known for his portrait work during his time in Cornwall. The painting is signed lower right and retains an artist's label verso, providing further identification of the work and its title. An engaging example of later 20th-century British abstraction, Gateway has strong decorative presence and would sit particularly well within a modern or contemporary interior.
