The chest incorporates five drawers in total, arranged in the classic configuration of two smaller drawers above three generously proportioned full-width drawers. This arrangement provides substantial and versatile storage while creating an elegant and beautifully balanced façade. Each drawer retains its original brass handles and fittings, preserving the authentic period character of the chest and providing an attractive contrast against the warm tones of the pitch pine. The most distinctive feature of this piece is undoubtedly the exceptional figuring across the drawer fronts. The timber displays an extraordinary variety of natural patterns, with dramatic grain movement and tonal variation giving each drawer an individual appearance. The carefully selected figured pitch pine elevates the chest considerably beyond more utilitarian examples of the period. Rich honey and amber tones have developed throughout the timber, complemented by a mature patina acquired through generations of age and use.
