The sitter is shown wearing a striped tallit, or Jewish prayer shawl, and holding a lulav, traditionally associated with the Jewish festival of Sukkot. His long white beard, contemplative expression and carefully rendered features create a powerful sense of spirituality and quiet devotion. Set against a deep, almost black background, the restrained composition allows the illuminated face, hands and folds of the prayer shawl to emerge dramatically from the darkness. Particularly accomplished is the treatment of the white fabric and its contrasting dark stripes, together with the subtle modelling of the sitter's aged features and hands. The work appears to bear an artist's monogram or initials at the lower right and is presented in an ornate gilt frame with a deep green velvet slip. The combination of gilding and dark green provides a particularly handsome setting for the painting and reinforces its traditional character. An evocative example of 20th-century religious and figurative painting, combining strong decorative presence with a subject deeply rooted in Jewish faith and tradition. An appealing acquisition for collectors of Judaica, religious art, portraiture and European figurative painting.
