K. Prizeman, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century and depicting an elegant young woman holding a small vase of flowers. The sitter is portrayed in three-quarter profile, turning gently towards the viewer with a composed and engaging expression. She wears an elaborate wide-brimmed dark hat and a refined pale yellow dress draped with a delicate lace shawl, its translucent folds and intricate detailing sensitively rendered by the artist. In her gloved hands she carries a small blue and white ceramic vase filled with pink flowers, introducing a particularly attractive note of colour to the composition. Set against a dark, atmospheric woodland background, the luminous complexion of the sitter and pale tones of her costume stand out dramatically. The artist demonstrates particular skill in the treatment of lace, fabric, skin and flowers, producing a romantic portrait characteristic of the late victorian and edwardian taste for elegant female subjects. Signed e. K. Prizeman lower right, the painting is presented in an impressive and substantial period gilt frame, richly ornamented with classical foliate and repeating moulded decoration. The large, deeply profiled frame gives the work considerable presence and complements the warmth of the portrait beautifully. The painting also benefits from notable provenance, having previously been sold through christie's in july 2000 as part of a british and continental watercolours and pictures auction. A highly decorative and accomplished period portrait combining strong visual presence, attractive subject matter and auction provenance, suitable for collectors of british portraiture and late victorian or edwardian art.
