A beautifully weathered antique French terracotta vinegar jar, or vinaigrier, distinguished by its generous rounded silhouette, two substantial loop handles and richly textured, partially glazed surface.
With its warm earthy tones, ranging from soft ochre and honey to reddish-brown clay, this traditional pottery vessel has a wonderfully organic and sculptural presence. Its irregular glazing, flowing drips and traces of age give the piece an authentic, understated character.
Traditional French Country Pottery
Estimated to date from the late 19th to early 20th century, this substantial earthenware vinegar jar reflects the practical craftsmanship of traditional French rural pottery.
Vinegar jars of this type were traditionally used in French households to prepare, store and dispense homemade vinegar. The small opening near the base was designed to accommodate a tap, allowing the vinegar to be drawn directly from the vessel.
The jar features a generously rounded body tapering towards a relatively narrow base, a short cylindrical neck and two opposing loop handles.
The upper body is covered in a muted honey and olive-toned glaze, which flows naturally over the reddish terracotta beneath. Particularly appealing as a standalone sculptural piece, the jar offers the quiet presence and material richness of traditional French utilitarian pottery, transformed into a decorative object with enduring character.
