august arnold and robert richter, two young cinematographers, founded the company in munich in 1917 and took its name from the first two letters of each surname. It went on to build cameras and lighting that became standard equipment on film sets across europe. The nameplate on this spotlight still reads arnold & richter, münchen. A fresnel spotlight uses a lens of concentric steps, originally developed for lighthouses, with a mirror behind the lamp. Moving the lamp holder relative to the lens changes the beam from spot to flood, which here is done with a rotary knob on the side of the body.

the spotlight has been fully cleaned, renovated and rewired with an e27 fitting, approximately 3 metres of cord, an inline switch and an eu plug. A bulb is included. The original mirror is intact and the fresnel lens is in place. The tripod was built by arri for its own equipment and has a chain between the legs.

the grey paint is original, with strong patina and signs of use. The original switch on the body remains but is not connected and is damaged, as shown in the photographs.

the spotlight measures 63 x 48 x 46 cm and the tripod adjusts the overall height from 150 to 215 cm.
