strand electric began in london in 1914, founded by the theatre electricians arthur earnshaw and phillip sheridan. The pattern 23 was introduced in 1953 and built until 1983. The 23n variant carries a 6 inch lens in a long tube, narrowing the beam to about 11 degrees, and was used as a follow spot in theatres, ballrooms and cabaret clubs. A colour frame holder at the front of the lens tube once carried the gels that coloured the beam. The tripod was made by ertel-werk of munich, a firm that dates to 1802 and began as a workshop for astronomical and surveying instruments, to carry optical equipment in the field.

the lamp was rewired with an e27 fitting, approximately 3 metres of cord, an inline switch and an eu plug, and a bulb is included. The paint, lens tube and tripod are original.

the original paint is worn at the edges and marked from handling. The lens is clear glass.

the spotlight measures 45 x 33 x 28 cm and the tripod adjusts the overall height from 118 to 165 cm.
