amber glass fragments are fused to the back of the shade, so the outer surface stays smooth and the amber is seen through a layer of clear glass. The effect has real depth. Behind the glass sits a gold metal canopy. With the lights off, the gold shows through and warms the center, while the rim extends past the canopy and stays nearly clear. Switched on, the three bulbs show through as soft pools of warm light and cast a halo onto the ceiling around the fixture.

in profile the shade is a shallow cone rather than a flat dish, tapering to a soft point at the center, so from below it reads as a sculptural form, not a disc. Three ribbed amber glass finials fix it to the canopy and carry the amber out to the edge.

this piece retains sylcom’s original printed label (see images), with the model number, the made in italy mark, and the ce conformity mark. Ce marking for european lighting dates from 1995, which places this murano glass flush mount in the late 1990s or 2000s.
