The central composition depicts a fire salamander surrounded by stylised flames, a famous emblem of King Francis I of France (1494–1547).

Of particular note is the monumental oval border, carved in a detailed twisted-cord motif, possibly inspired by the ‘cordelière’, a motif associated with the French Renaissance and the royal symbolism of Francis I and his mother, Louise of Savoy.

The surrounding surface is decorated with a geometric diamond pattern featuring small carved bumps, which forms a striking contrast to the central image.

The panel is crafted from solid oak planks with a beautiful sheen and patina, visible traditional woodworking marks and a reinforcing strip on the reverse.

It may originally have formed part of an architectural interior, such as a monumental door, wall panelling or a large piece of furniture. See less
