This exceptional example of early 20th-century weaving captures the refined elegance characteristic of Peking production. The design utilizes a highly pictorial, open-field format, distinguishing it from earlier, more densely patterned antique rugs.

The expansive central field is rendered in a luminous, warm ivory tone, providing a perfect canvas for the dramatic contrast of the deep indigo border. This masterful use of negative space allows the intricate, yet sparse, botanical motifs to truly resonate. The secondary colors—soft blues, russets, and pale golds—are used sparingly to highlight the symbolic elements within the composition.

A graceful, sinuous branch motif extends from both the top and bottom of the composition, framing a series of stylized hanging pendants and lanterns, many bearing traditional Chinese symbols of good fortune and longevity. The central element is a delicate circular wreath, featuring stylized chrysanthemums and small birds, offering a focal point without disrupting the field's tranquility.

Woven to a generous room size, this rug was clearly intended as a centerpiece for a formal salon or dining area. The restrained palette and sophisticated design ensure that this piece remains a timeless statement of East Asian artistry, suitable for both traditional and contemporary interiors seeking historical depth.
