This exceptional Peking weaving captures the transitional aesthetic of early 20th-century Chinese textile art. The design is dominated by a striated field of alternating navy and taupe bands, creating a powerful, almost kinetic visual texture, making it a compelling example among antique rugs.

Centered within this dynamic field is a circular cartouche featuring a highly abstracted landscape, rendered in deep indigo and subtle earth tones. This motif, perhaps depicting mountains or a village scene, offers a moment of traditional pictorial representation against the otherwise modern, linear backdrop. Given its narrow dimensions, this piece functions beautifully as one of the finest small scatter size rugs, ideal for entryways or beside a bed.

The palette, while seemingly restrained, utilizes subtle shifts in tone—from deep midnight blue to lighter cerulean and variegated beige—to achieve its remarkable depth. The overall effect is a sophisticated, textural application of color, distinguishing it from more overtly vibrant multicolor jewel tone rugs while maintaining complexity.

Dating to the 1900s, this Peking rug serves as a testament to the period's willingness to blend ancient Chinese iconography with emerging Western Art Deco sensibilities. Its unique visual rhythm and high-quality wool construction ensure it remains a striking, enduring decorative element suitable for both traditional and contemporary interiors. See less
