An impressive American Classical Revival mahogany library table, dating to approximately 1890–1925 and bearing a label for Ernest F. Hagen of New York. Particularly interesting is the provenance recorded on the label, which identifies a purchaser as “Mr. I. K. Taylor” of 75 Berkeley Avenue, Orange, New Jersey. Research into the address uncovered a listing in the 1908 Blue Book for Mr. and Mrs. Irving Kurtz Taylor at that same residence, suggesting a possible connection to the table's early ownership. This surviving documentation offers a fascinating glimpse into the table's history and its association with the New York furniture trade. Drawing inspiration from the bold architectural forms of early 19th-century American Classical furniture, the table features a generously proportioned rectangular top, two drawers, and a dramatic double-pedestal base with richly carved animal-form supports. Its commanding proportions, handsome mahogany surfaces, and elaborate carving make it a particularly striking example of Classical Revival design.
Constructed primarily of mahogany, the table features a broad rectangular top with a molded edge above two spacious drawers, each fitted with decorative gilt-brass lion's-mask ring pulls and small keyhole escutcheons. The drawer fronts are framed by carved corner blocks featuring delicate foliate ornament and small turned pendant details. Below, the table rests on two substantial cylindrical pedestal supports accented with gilt bands and richly carved collars. Each pedestal transitions into boldly carved animal-form legs with detailed lion's heads, flowing manes, and substantial paw feet fitted with casters. The two pedestals are joined by an elaborately carved horizontal stretcher incorporating a broad central element, lending the table both visual balance and architectural presence. The combination of restrained upper-case design, classical brass ornament, and expressive carving creates a particularly handsome interpretation of the American Classical tradition.
The table is in nice antique or vintage condition, showing scattered surface marks, scratches, and variations in color and finish consistent with its age and normal use. The tabletop exhibits signs of use, including minor staining, surface wear, and areas of damage to the finish, reflecting the piece's long history as a functional household furnishing. These imperfections are visible but do not significantly detract from the table's overall character and presentation. The mahogany retains an attractive warm patina, with the richly carved pedestal supports displaying wonderful depth and detail. The two drawers offer practical storage, while the generous tabletop provides ample space for books, writing, or display. The surviving Ernest F. Hagen label and associated purchaser information add an especially interesting historical dimension, although whether Hagen manufactured or retailed the table has not been definitively established. With its impressive proportions, distinctive carving, and enduring functionality, this handsome library table would make a wonderful centerpiece for a study, library, office, or living room. 31h x 60w x 36d knee height 24
