An exceptionally large French majolica terracotta rabbit sculpture by the celebrated Poterie du Mesnil de Bavent of Normandy, France. Beautifully modeled in a reclining pose with dramatically elongated ears, delicate naturalistic detailing, and striking inset pink glass eyes.
Finished in a soft white glaze with subtle gray undertones and fine surface crazing, the sculpture has a wonderfully expressive character. Its impressive 19-inch scale distinguishes it from the smaller Bavent rabbits more commonly encountered, making it a particularly charming example of French decorative pottery.
Established in 1842, the historic Bavent pottery became renowned for its handcrafted architectural ornaments, garden sculptures, and whimsical animal figures. This substantial rabbit beautifully captures the workshop’s tradition of French country craftsmanship and sculptural artistry.
In very good vintage condition. Signed and stamped on the underside.
