Executed using the traditional sand-casting method, the composition depicts a jockey mounted on his horse accompanied by a standing groom, capturing the elegance and naturalism for which good’s equestrian sculpture is particularly admired. Signed “j. Willis good” to the bronze and presented on a substantial green marble base. The bronze retains an attractive dark brown patina. Dimensions: 33cm h x 35cm w x 15.5cm d, including base weight: approximately 7.8kg condition: excellent antique condition with a rich, well-preserved patina. John willis good was an accomplished british animalier and equestrian sculptor who studied under sir joseph edgar boehm. He made his royal academy debut in 1870 and exhibited a succession of equestrian subjects in bronze and terracotta during the following decade. His work is distinguished by its close observation, anatomical accuracy and lively naturalism. Good's career was exceptionally brief, and relatively few models are known, making his surviving bronzes particularly desirable examples of victorian sporting sculpture. See less
