The substantial two-handled urn-form body is richly worked in relief with classical figural decoration, including putti and elaborate scrolling ornament. Sculptural handles, foliate detailing and a beautifully aged bronze surface give the lamp the extravagant character associated with french decorative arts of the napoleon iii period. Raised on an architectural pedestal terminating in an ornate shaped foot, the bronze body is surmounted by a large traditional fabric shade with scalloped edges, fringe and tassel detailing. The generous proportions make this a particularly commanding statement lamp, suitable for a large console, library table, side table or traditionally furnished interior. The piece is signed and associated with léopold oudry, whose 19th-century paris workshop became known for decorative metalwork and bronzed objects.
