This impressive late 19th-century fireplace is richly decorated throughout, displaying the crisp and finely defined casting associated with quality Victorian architectural ironwork. Designed as a combination fireplace, the mantel, surround, fire opening and grate are incorporated into a single cohesive architectural composition. Particularly desirable is the survival of the original front bars and retractable canopy, important period components that preserve the authenticity and completeness of the fireplace. The functioning canopy adds both architectural interest and an attractive example of Victorian fireplace engineering. The fireplace has undergone a comprehensive professional restoration. The cast iron was carefully stripped and thoroughly cleaned before receiving a protective coating designed to preserve the surface.
