Each figure is incorporated into an elaborate twin-light composition, with branching tree-form supports rising behind the figures and terminating in two floral candle nozzles. The stems are carefully modelled to imitate textured bark and are embellished with applied leaves and flowers, creating an appealing combination of figurative sculpture and functional decorative porcelain. The boy and girl are portrayed in romantic pastoral costume, painted in a restrained palette of soft pastel enamels with delicate gilt highlights. Their relaxed poses and expressive modelling are complemented by naturalistic bases designed to resemble moss-covered woodland ground. The quality of the modelling, particularly evident in the figures, costumes, foliage and branching supports, reflects the accomplished craftsmanship associated with Royal Worcester's late Victorian and Edwardian decorative porcelain. The compositions show the influence of the modelling tradition associated with James Hadley and the romantic pastoral subjects popular during the period. Displayed together, the candlesticks form an elegant and balanced pair with considerable decorative presence, particularly suited to a mantelpiece, console or collection of fine English porcelain.
