Of elegant navette or boat-shaped form, the piece is richly decorated throughout and exemplifies the elaborate decorative silver for which the Comyns workshop became particularly renowned during the late 19th century. ㅤ The elongated body is framed by a traditional gadrooned border and embellished with an accomplished combination of foliate, floral and swag motifs, creating a richly textured composition across the silver surface. ㅤ The raised gallery is particularly impressive, finely hand chased with scrolling ornament and intricately pierced with symmetrical fretwork. The openwork construction introduces a delicate sense of lightness while contrasting beautifully with the more substantial body below. ㅤ Further scrolling decoration continues around the adjoining galleries, creating a cohesive ornamental treatment when viewed from every angle. The dish is raised upon four decorative openwork feet, giving the piece an elegant elevated profile and enhancing its sculptural presence. ㅤ William Comyns became especially associated with highly decorative silver during the 1880s, producing elaborate objects that were retailed through leading luxury establishments. Surviving Comyns bon bon dishes from the same period similarly demonstrate the firm's characteristic use of pierced, foliate and scrolling ornament. ㅤ The dish remains in very good antique condition, with only minor surface marks consistent with age. It is free from engraved presentation inscriptions or monograms, allowing the elaborate original decoration to remain uninterrupted. ㅤ with a net silver weight of 199.3 grams, this is a substantial and beautifully executed example of late Victorian decorative silver, equally suited for use as a bon bon dish, trinket dish or elegant display object.
