The fall-front opens to create a useful writing surface and reveals a neatly fitted interior, thoughtfully arranged with compartments for organising correspondence, stationery and other everyday writing essentials. The bureau retains its original key, an attractive surviving detail that adds to the established character and completeness of the piece. Below the writing section are two spacious drawers, providing generous additional storage. Both drawers retain their original oak knob handles, complementing the timber beautifully and preserving the traditional appearance of the bureau. The piece stands on elegantly turned legs united by a substantial supporting stretcher. This robust construction provides excellent strength and stability while giving the bureau an attractive and well-balanced silhouette. Subtle carved detailing provides additional decorative interest without overwhelming the natural beauty of the oak, reflecting the thoughtful craftsmanship evident throughout the piece. The oak itself is particularly attractive, displaying beautiful natural grain, rich warm colouring and appealing tonal variation. The matured timber gives the bureau considerable warmth and established character. Very well made and of fine quality, the bureau combines practical functionality with traditional cabinet making, making it equally suitable as a working desk or decorative piece of furniture. At only 69 cm wide, its compact proportions make it particularly versatile, while the 74 cm desk height provides a practical writing position. It would work beautifully within a study, living room, bedroom or hallway. The combination of a fitted writing interior, original key, two spacious drawers, original oak handles, turned legs, supporting stretcher and carved detailing makes this a particularly desirable example. Presented in good vintage condition, with appropriate signs of age and historic use consistent with its 20th-century origin. A highly desirable oak bureau combining quality craftsmanship, practical storage and an elegantly fitted writing interior within a compact and timeless design.
