Constructed from substantial solid oak, virtually every visible surface is enriched with intricate carving. Floral, foliate and geometric motifs are worked in deep relief across the fall front, drawer façades and surrounding structure, giving the bureau an unusually decorative and architectural presence. The sloping fall front opens to form a writing surface, revealing a beautifully arranged fitted interior comprising multiple pigeonholes and small drawers for correspondence, documents and writing accessories. The combination of elaborate exterior carving and practical fitted interior makes the bureau as functional as it is decorative. Below are generously proportioned drawers providing substantial storage. The bureau retains three original working locks together with their keys, an especially attractive feature for a piece of this considerable age. More than two centuries of use have given the oak a deep, warm colour with rich tonal variation and an authentic aged surface. Historic marks, subtle imperfections and wear remain visible throughout and contribute considerably to the character of the piece. Presented in very good antique condition for its age and structurally solid. There is a professionally repaired historic crack to the left side of the fall front, together with age-related marks and patination consistent with an authentic late 18th-century piece. A substantial piece of period furniture ideally suited to a country house, library, study or sophisticated traditional interior.
