The substantial 19th-century surround features an elegant frieze embellished with urn motifs and cascading floral swags, decorative elements characteristic of late victorian interpretations of classical design. Above, the original cast iron mantel shelf is finished with crisp dentil moulding, adding further architectural definition to the composition. The exceptional quality of the casting is evident throughout, with remarkably crisp relief decoration and finely defined details that demonstrate the craftsmanship of late 19th-century british architectural ironwork. Importantly, the fireplace retains its original cast iron mantel top rather than a later replacement, preserving the integrity and character of the original design. An original registration number dates the fireplace to 1896. It was reclaimed from a period property in farnham, surrey, providing additional provenance and historical interest. The surround has undergone a comprehensive professional refurbishment. Historic layers of paint were painstakingly removed by hand rather than through shot blasting, helping to protect the original cast iron surface and preserve the sharp definition of the decorative casting. The fireplace was subsequently wire brushed to both the front and reverse before being treated with traditional grate polish and carefully buffed. This process produces a rich dark metallic finish while beautifully accentuating the urns, floral swags, dentil moulding and other original details. The reverse has also been professionally painted, completing the restoration from front to back. Discreet original mounting lugs remain on the outer body for straightforward and secure installation. With its open architectural form, the surround is particularly well suited for installation around a wood-burning stove or traditional fireplace opening. A superb and highly decorative example of late victorian cast iron craftsmanship, combining documented 1896 dating, original components, surrey provenance and beautifully preserved classical ornament.
