The imposing upper section incorporates a substantial display shelf and beautifully bevelled mirror, creating an elegant focal point while reflecting light and adding considerable visual depth. Intricate carving enriches the structure throughout, demonstrating the high standard of craftsmanship invested in the piece. The lower section provides an excellent combination of concealed and accessible storage. Two blind-door cupboards are positioned to either side, while three central drawers provide convenient storage for cutlery, linens and smaller household items. The original brass handles and fittings remain in place, complementing the warm tones of the walnut and preserving the authentic character of the sideboard. A further open shelf extends across the lower section, providing additional display or storage space. The entire composition is raised upon beautifully turned legs, giving the substantial piece a refined and well-balanced silhouette. Particularly impressive is the walnut itself, displaying pronounced natural grain, attractive figuring and rich colour throughout. A mature patina developed through generations of age and use gives the timber considerable warmth and depth, while the extensive carved detailing creates changing areas of light and shadow across the surfaces. Beyond its craftsmanship, the sideboard is accompanied by a remarkable family history dating to the period of the Second World War. According to the family's documented provenance, the piece was acquired by the previous owner's grandfather for £8 during the era of the London Blitz. He purchased it while working for a gentleman who was subsequently killed during one of the bombing raids. The sideboard remained within the same family thereafter, passing from the grandfather to the grandmother and subsequently to the most recent generation. A postcard recording details of its history has also been retained, providing an unusual tangible connection to the story surrounding the piece. Very well constructed and presented in good antique condition, with appropriate signs of age and use contributing to its established character. For easier transportation and installation, the sideboard separates into two principal sections. Combining substantial proportions, richly figured walnut, extensive hand-carved decoration, original fittings and an unusually evocative provenance, this is a highly desirable statement piece with both decorative and historical interest. Ideally suited to a substantial dining room, drawing room, entrance hall or distinguished period interior. Dimensions: Height: 179 cm Width: 155 cm Depth: 58 cm Worktop Height: 94 cm See less
