The composition centres on a group of traditional fishing boats moored close to shore, their tall masts creating a strong vertical rhythm across the scene. Fishermen attend to their vessels while figures gather along the waterfront, with further sailing boats crossing the calm water beyond. The surrounding buildings and softly rendered hills provide an atmospheric backdrop, while Webb's warm, luminous palette captures the distinctive character of a late 19th-century British fishing community. William Webb was a Manchester-based painter particularly known for his marine, coastal and fishing subjects. Although he lived and worked primarily in Manchester, he travelled throughout Britain in search of subjects and developed a particular fondness for the Isle of Man. Webb first exhibited in Manchester in 1889 and went on to show 57 works there during his career. He also exhibited four works in Liverpool and three at the Royal Academy, London. In 1899, he was elected an Associate of the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts. His relatively short career produced an appealing body of marine paintings characterised by busy working harbours, fishing communities and atmospheric coastal views. The painting is signed and dated “W. Webb ’04” lower right and is presented in an impressive gilt frame.
