Painted in oil on panel, this intimate work demonstrates Hulk's characteristic ability to capture the atmosphere and tranquillity of the sea. His marine compositions are particularly admired for their treatment of changing light, expansive skies and sailing and fishing vessels, rendered with a distinctly Romantic sensibility. Despite its relatively small scale, the painting has considerable presence, with the compact format lending itself particularly well to a collection of 19th-century paintings or as a standalone decorative work. The painting is signed lower right and importantly retains its original antique frame, enhancing its period character and presentation. Abraham Hulk Sr. was born in London and studied at the Amsterdam Academy, where he trained under portrait painter Jean Augustin Daiwaille. Although initially associated with portraiture, Hulk became best known for marine and coastal subjects and developed a highly recognisable atmospheric style. During the 1830s he travelled in North America before returning to the Netherlands. He subsequently exhibited in The Hague and Leeuwarden between 1843 and 1868. Hulk returned to London in 1870 and remained there until his death in 1897. His work was also exhibited at the Royal Academy in London, including in 1876 and 1890. Today, Hulk is particularly associated with atmospheric Dutch and British marine painting of the Victorian period, and his works have been collected and sold extensively throughout Britain, continental Europe and the United States.
