The hinged top opens to reveal a generously proportioned interior, providing substantial storage for blankets, linens and other household items. The coffer retains its original hinges, adding to its authentic period character. Of particular note is the decorative front, extensively embellished with carved and moulded detailing that demonstrates the craftsmanship of the period and gives the otherwise restrained form considerable architectural interest. The solid oak displays pronounced natural grain and figuring throughout, complemented by rich, warm tones and a mature patina developed through centuries of age and use. Raised upon sturdy square legs, the coffer has a strong and well-balanced silhouette. Its relatively compact 88 cm width makes it particularly versatile compared with many larger period coffers. Presented in very good antique condition, with appropriate signs of age and use consistent with its 18th-century origin. Both practical and highly decorative, this characterful piece could be used as a blanket chest, linen chest or general storage piece and would sit beautifully at the foot of a bed, beneath a window or within a hallway, living room or country-house interior.
