Rich with traditional Masonic symbolism, the piece combines finely engraved goldwork with an elegant circular form characteristic of early 20th-century gentleman’s jewellery. ㅤ The circular pendant is centred by the traditional Masonic Square and Compasses, surrounding the capital letter “G.” Together, these form among the most recognisable symbols associated with Freemasonry and give the jewel its distinctive identity. ㅤ The outer border is finely hand engraved, providing an attractive decorative frame around the central emblem. The detailed engraving contrasts beautifully with the warm tone of the rose gold and demonstrates the careful workmanship involved in producing such a compact jewel. ㅤ Within Masonic tradition, the Square and Compasses have long carried symbolic associations with principles of conduct and morality. The square is commonly associated with acting with fairness and integrity, while the compasses symbolically represent restraint and the setting of appropriate boundaries. ㅤ A substantial suspension bale allows the piece to be worn from a traditional watch chain, Albert chain or necklace, making it suitable for use either as a fob or pendant. ㅤ The piece is fully hallmarked in Birmingham for 1908 and carries the .375 fineness mark confirming 9-carat gold, together with the maker’s mark of William Oakley Davis. ㅤ Weighing 5.2 grams, the pendant has a pleasing substance for its compact proportions. It remains in very good antique condition, displaying only minor surface marks consistent with age and no notable damage, bruising or repairs. ㅤ Accompanied by its period leather-bound presentation case, this is an attractive and complete example of Edwardian Masonic jewellery combining identifiable British craftsmanship, symbolic decoration and warm rose gold.
