This substantial cast-glass paperweight depicts a traditional chinese guardian lion biting a sword, an auspicious symbol associated with protection, strength and the warding off of negative energy. Produced during tittot's early period in the 1990s, fruition is an accomplished example of the studio's distinctive approach to liuli glass. The sculpture has been formed using the pâte de verre / lost-wax casting technique, allowing the intricate modelling of the lion, sword and decorative details to be rendered with considerable depth and definition. The warm amber body has excellent optical depth, with subtle variations and inclusions characteristic of individually cast glass. The sculpture is particularly impressive when viewed under different lighting conditions. Of special interest to collectors is the limited-edition numbering, with this example being 595 of only 658 produced worldwide. The underside carries the original hand-etched studio markings, including the tittot signature, the 1996 production date and the individual edition number. The sculpture is accompanied by its original tittot presentation box and certificate of authenticity, making this an especially desirable example for collectors seeking a complete, well-preserved presentation. Fluorescence the glass has been described as containing trace mineral compounds that produce a green fluorescence when exposed to ultraviolet light. This unusual characteristic adds another dimension to the piece and may be of particular interest to collectors of vintage fluorescent glass. Please refer to the photographs for the appearance under uv illumination. Symbolism the guardian lion is an important traditional motif in chinese decorative art and is associated with protection, strength, prosperity and the safeguarding of the home. The sword held within the lion's mouth reinforces the protective symbolism of the design. The title fruition is particularly appropriate to the work, suggesting maturity, development and the culmination of change — themes reflected in the sculpture's symbolism and its place within tittot's early artistic production. A substantial and visually impressive piece, this sculpture works equally well as a collector's paperweight, desk sculpture or standalone decorative object. Its limited production, early date, original presentation and distinctive subject make it an appealing addition to a collection of asian art glass, liuli sculpture or contemporary taiwanese glass.
