The surround is distinguished by its restrained architectural form, with simple, minimally decorated legs and frieze creating a refined appearance. Unlike more heavily ornamented victorian fireplaces, the clean proportions give this example considerable versatility, allowing it to work equally well within a traditional period property or a contemporary interior. Importantly, the fireplace retains its original cast iron mantel top, preserving the integrity of the original composition. With no rear projection, the surround can be positioned against a flat wall or installed around an existing chimney breast opening, making it particularly adaptable for modern installations. The cast iron has been professionally stripped and thoroughly cleaned before receiving a protective treatment. It has subsequently been finished and polished using traditional grate polish, producing an attractive dark gunmetal appearance that accentuates the subtle details and natural character of the iron. Original mounting lugs remain incorporated into the outer body, allowing for straightforward and secure installation. A handsome and versatile example of victorian architectural ironwork, combining authentic period construction, restrained design, hertfordshire provenance and a professionally restored finish.
