The barrel-shaped body is constructed from richly toned oak, displaying attractive natural grain and warm colour throughout. The timber is complemented beautifully by substantial brass bands encircling the exterior, creating a striking contrast while giving the piece its distinctive traditional appearance. The hinged lift-up lid opens to reveal a surprisingly spacious interior compartment, providing useful concealed storage for a variety of household items while preserving the clean sculptural form of the barrel when closed. The piece is elevated upon four sturdy square legs, giving the barrel a strong and well-balanced presence while distinguishing it from a conventional floor-standing storage vessel. The raised construction also contributes to its unusual furniture-like character. Particularly appealing is the combination of materials.
