Hand-painted on cotton canvas using traditional mineral and earth-derived pigments, the composition presents Tsongkhapa seated in the vajra, or full lotus, posture upon an elaborate lotus throne. He is immediately identifiable by his distinctive pointed yellow hat, an important iconographic attribute associated with the Gelug tradition. Tsongkhapa’s hands are positioned before his heart in the Dharmachakra mudra, or gesture of teaching, symbolising the turning of the Wheel of Dharma and reflecting his enduring reputation as one of Tibet’s most influential Buddhist teachers and philosophers. The central figure is surrounded by traditional sacred imagery, including a prominently rendered stupa, while the carefully articulated robes, throne and architectural elements are enriched with delicate linear detailing and a restrained palette of ochre, coral, green and deep blue. The stylised treatment and traditional mineral pigments give the work the beautifully muted surface and patina associated with historic Tibetan devotional painting. Tsongkhapa founded Ganden Monastery near Lhasa in 1409, which became the principal seat of the Gelug tradition. Thangkas depicting him were created not simply as decorative works, but as devotional and teaching objects intended to support meditation, religious instruction and spiritual practice. An evocative example of 19th-century Tibetan Buddhist sacred art, combining religious significance, traditional craftsmanship and compelling decorative presence.
