Very well made and of fine quality, this handsome chest displays the robust construction and balanced proportions associated with English furniture of the William and Mary period, while more than three centuries of age have given the piece tremendous depth and character. The front is arranged with four generously proportioned drawers, graduating in size from top to bottom. This traditional configuration provides substantial storage while contributing to the strong and well-balanced architectural appearance of the chest. Each drawer retains its original brass handles and fittings, particularly desirable surviving features that preserve the historic character and integrity of the piece. The drawers themselves are notably substantial, with a wonderfully solid and chunky construction that reflects the quality of the cabinetmaking and gives the chest the reassuring presence expected from furniture of this period. Raised on traditional bracket feet, the chest maintains an elegant stance while retaining the robust character of its early construction. For ease of transport and installation, the chest separates neatly into two sections. This practical feature makes the substantial piece considerably easier to position while having no impact on its impressive appearance once assembled. The oak has matured beautifully over more than three centuries, developing gorgeous natural grain, rich warm colouring and a wonderfully established patina. The variations across the timber provide exceptional depth and individuality that could only develop through considerable age and historic use. Its substantial drawer construction, original brass handles and fittings, bracket feet and beautifully aged oak combine to create an especially characterful survivor from the late 17th century. Measuring 93 cm wide and 95 cm high, the chest offers generous storage while retaining beautifully balanced proportions, making it suitable as both a functional piece of furniture and an important decorative statement. Presented in great antique condition, particularly considering its considerable age, with appropriate signs of historic use and surface character consistent with its 17th-century origin. A rare and highly desirable William and Mary oak chest of drawers combining remarkable originality, substantial period craftsmanship and more than three centuries of beautifully developed character within an exceptional early English design.
