Each scallop-shaped plaque is finely modelled in high relief with elegant female figures within idyllic garden settings, surrounded by elaborate applied floral decoration, raised gilt beading and softly coloured pastel enamels. One plaque depicts two graceful young women within a tranquil garden, tending to a pair of white doves beside a decorative bowl. The composition evokes traditional themes of peace, purity and affection, with delicately modelled flowers and foliage creating a richly dimensional setting. The companion plaque portrays an elegant standing maiden alongside a seated female figure playing a classical lyre, referencing music, harmony and the arts. The flowing garments, graceful poses and carefully rendered facial features demonstrate the accomplished modelling of the figures. Both plaques are surrounded by elaborate borders incorporating applied blossoms, stylised scrolling stems and raised ornamentation. Subtle pastel colouring is complemented by gilt highlights, creating an attractive contrast with the soft matte surface of the bisque porcelain. Likely produced in Continental Europe, possibly Germany or Austria, around the turn of the 20th century, the pair reflects the period's fascination with classical subjects, romantic imagery and naturalistic floral ornament. Presented in very good antique condition with light age-related wear consistent with careful display. An impressive and unusual pair of decorative porcelain wall plaques, combining sculptural relief, classical imagery and delicate floral decoration. Particularly appealing to collectors of Continental porcelain, Art Nouveau decorative arts and classical-inspired interiors. See less
