The chest features four practical drawers, providing useful storage while retaining a relatively slender footprint. Each drawer retains its original handles and fittings, contributing to the authentic period character and decorative appeal of the piece. Particularly noteworthy is the extensive carved detailing throughout the chest. The ornamentation demonstrates considerable attention to detail and complements the naturally expressive character of the rosewood, creating a richly decorative appearance without overwhelming the compact form. The rosewood itself displays particularly attractive natural figuring, deep grain and warm tonal variation throughout. Its rich colouring provides an ideal backdrop for the carved decoration and highlights the craftsmanship involved in its construction. The chest is raised upon a solid plinth base, giving the tall, narrow piece a strong and well-balanced silhouette. Measuring only 36.5 cm wide and 31 cm deep while standing 87 cm high, its unusual proportions provide valuable vertical storage while requiring remarkably little floor space. This compact format makes the chest particularly versatile for a bedroom, hallway, study or living space, where it can function as both a practical storage piece and an attractive decorative accent. Presented in good antique condition, with appropriate signs of age and historic use consistent with its early 20th-century origin. A highly desirable example of Indian decorative furniture, combining richly figured rosewood, intricate carving, original fittings and exceptionally useful compact proportions.
