The chest features a traditional two-over-two arrangement, comprising two smaller drawers above two generously proportioned full-width drawers. This configuration provides excellent practical storage while maintaining a beautifully balanced and symmetrical façade. Each drawer retains its original brass handles, providing an attractive period detail and complementing the rich, warm tones of the mahogany. The survival of the original hardware further enhances the authenticity and character of this charming Georgian piece. The chest is raised upon traditional bracket feet, providing a sturdy foundation while maintaining the restrained architectural form characteristic of Georgian cabinet furniture. Particularly appealing is the quality of the mahogany, displaying attractive natural grain and figuring throughout. Its rich colour and mature patina have developed beautifully over more than two centuries, giving the timber considerable depth and character. The restrained design, balanced proportions and absence of excessive ornamentation allow the quality of the timber and cabinetmaking to take centre stage, reflecting the refined elegance associated with late Georgian furniture. At only 88.5 cm wide and 77 cm high, this is a particularly desirable compact example. Smaller Georgian chests of this scale are exceptionally versatile, providing substantial storage without requiring the space of a conventional full-size chest. Very well constructed and presented in good antique condition, with appropriate signs of age and historic use consistent with its late 18th-century origin. A highly usable and attractive piece of Georgian furniture, ideally suited to a bedroom, dressing room, hallway, drawing room or sophisticated period or contemporary interior.
