The upper section opens to reveal a well-appointed fitted interior, providing a useful arrangement for stationery, correspondence and smaller personal items. When opened, the writing surface sits at a comfortable desk height of approximately 69.5 cm, making the piece both decorative and genuinely functional. Below the writing section is a useful central drawer, providing additional concealed storage. The bureau retains its original handles and fittings throughout and is accompanied by a key, preserving the integrity and character of the original design. A particularly distinctive feature is the elaborate fretwork decoration, inspired by traditional Chippendale furniture and executed with impressive attention to detail. The decorative treatment gives the bureau a lighter, more refined appearance and creates considerable visual interest. The upper section is finished with a raised gallery, further enhancing the architectural silhouette of the piece and providing an attractive finishing detail. Below, an open shelf provides additional storage or display space for books and decorative objects while contributing to the elegant, open proportions of the design. The mahogany displays particularly attractive natural figuring throughout, enhanced by a rich, warm colour and established patina that complements the traditional Chippendale-inspired detailing beautifully. Measuring only 74 cm wide and 37 cm deep, this is an exceptionally practical bureau for smaller interiors. It provides a functional writing area and useful storage while occupying considerably less floor space than a conventional desk. Presented in good condition, with appropriate signs of age and historic use consistent with its 20th-century origin. A highly attractive example of English Chippendale Revival furniture, combining richly figured mahogany, intricate fretwork, a fitted writing interior and exceptionally versatile proportions.
