The bowl is sculpted as the head of a bearded man wearing a broad hat with a prominent feather. The long stem is elaborately carved with bands of roses, geometric ornament and turned sections, and terminates in a dark tip.
The pipe is in practically new condition. The original case, lined in fabric, measures 43 cm by 13 cm. Meerschaum pipes of this size and quality were produced in Austrian workshops, particularly in Vienna, for the European and American markets in the late 19th century. The combination of the figural bowl and the richly decorated stem makes this an impressive example of the period.
