Sweeping, energetic brushwork captures the rush of water through a rocky gorge, with blue and frothing white currents, pale melting snow, exposed earth, and twisting tree roots. Wispy emerging foliage on one tree hints at things to come, as does the bank of yellowy green on the hillside to the right.

The artist’s bold, painterly handling gives the composition a sense of movement and immediacy, while the cool blues and whites contrast with the warm ochres, browns, and greens of the surrounding terrain.

The painting is lower-left signed and possibly reads “SHAGEN.” The title “Spring in Norway” appears, faintly, on the back of the canvas.

The work is presented in an attractive substantial gilt-tone frame with a textured traditional profile that compliments the painting’s character. The style and age of the frame suggests the painting to have been accomplished around 1910.

The painting measures 21 1/2 high, 27 1/2 wide, including the frame. See less
