This exceptional example of early 20th-century Chinese weaving presents a dramatic contrast between its deeply saturated navy field and the luminous camel-toned border. The palette is characteristic of the refined designs produced in Peking during this era, appealing to collectors of fine antique rugs.

The central field is sparsely decorated with delicate, naturalistic sprays featuring birds, butterflies, and flowering branches, creating an open, airy composition typical of Chinese court style. The primary border frames this scene with an intricate series of cartouches and floral motifs, rendered in soft blues, creams, and pale golds.

Woven with a thick, plush pile, this rug exhibits the superior quality and craftsmanship expected from the finest workshops of the period. The rich, almost inky, field provides a stunning foundation, while the subtle variations in the deep blue color rugs ensure visual depth and complexity that only age can achieve.

The design successfully balances traditional Chinese iconography—symbolizing longevity and prosperity—with the slightly looser, more decorative aesthetic that emerged in the 1920s. Its generous dimensions classify it among room size rugs, making it suitable for anchoring a sophisticated living space or formal dining room. This piece is a truly museum-worthy textile. See less
