Imagine these lovelies on your vanity, dressing table, bathroom shelf or grouped into a collection of Portieux Vallerysthal glassware: a truly fabulous pair of antique P.V. France white opaline glass apothecary bottles, decorated with hand-painted gilt stars and bands and topped with wonderfully sculptural ball stoppers.
Most likely dating to the 1920s–30s, the graduated pair features luminous white opaline glass scattered with whimsical gold stars, framed by simple gilt bands around the bodies and stoppers. The combination is wonderfully chic—classic French opaline with just the right amount of playful glamour.
Especially wonderful as a pair, the bottles stand approximately 8" and 6" tall, creating a beautifully graduated silhouette. Both retain their original fitted stoppers as well as their P.V. France paper labels—a particularly nice detail, as these labels are often lost over time.
White P.V. France opaline decorated with gold stars appears far less frequently than the better-known blue opaline examples, making this matching pair an especially unusual find.
Portieux Vallerysthal has a long and fascinating history in French glassmaking. The Portieux glassworks traces its origins to the early 18th century, when François Magnien established a glassworks in the Vosges region under the patronage of Duke Leopold of Lorraine. Vallerysthal began glass production in Lorraine in 1836. Following the Franco-Prussian War and the annexation of the Vallerysthal region by Germany, Vallerysthal joined with Portieux, allowing the company to continue serving the French market.
