This is an elegant vintage rectangular keepsake box, crafted from blood sandalwood (xue tan mu) with a rich, dark reddish-brown finish.
The lid of the box is beautifully decorated with mother-of-pearl (nacre) inlay, depicting two mythical Qilin (or guardian lions) in a dynamic, prancing pose. The inlay is rendered in shimmering shades of cream, pale green, and pink, with stylized mountain and grass motifs surrounding the figures. The box is constructed with traditional joinery and features a prominent circular brass lock plate with a traditional hasp and pin closure on the front.
The wood displays a dense, natural grain and a smooth, lustrous patina. The interior is spacious and unadorned, providing ample storage for jewelry, small trinkets, or important keepsakes. This piece is both a functional storage box and a beautiful example of traditional Chinese decorative arts.
